The LA Kings were picked by many to upset the Vegas Golden Knights (including me), but they did the complete opposite and got swept. Marc-Andre Fleury was unbelievable in the series and each game was only decided by one goal but for most of this round 1 matchup, the Golden Knights dominated the Kings.
Anze Kopitar was the Kings best player in the series but only had 2 points in the 4 games. The 70’s line was invisible, Jeff Carter, Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli were nowhere to be found. Adrian Kempe had 37 points in the regular season but didn’t score after February 7th. Dustin Brown had a revelation of a season, but I wouldn’t count on that to continue. Drew Doughty played 30 minutes in Game 4, although he did cost them a key goal in Game 3 when he left the front of the net wide open. Outside of Doughty, there is Alec Martinez and Jake Muzzin are in the top 4 but after that I wouldn’t count on Dion Phanuef improving.
The Kings aren’t necessarily done, you have a top 10 player in the league (Kopitar), a top 5 goalie in the league (Quick) and a top 3 defensemen (Doughty). A big start next year is crucial to the LA Kings, Drew Doughty publicly said that he is going to get paid what he is worth so one would have to take that as he will test the open market. If the Kings are not in a playoff spot come February next year, would they try to get something for Doughty?
