Canada loses in the Quarterfinals

FINLAND-2 CANADA-1 OT

2 goals in the 2 biggest games of the tournament. A power-play that ranked 8th and a Quarterfinal exit. That’s the report on Team Canada. The Canadians got a 2nd period goal from Ian Mitchell and Mike Dipietro seemed to be stealing the game. That all changed with 46 seconds left as an Eeli Tolvanen centering pass went off of Aleksi Heponiemi and the Finns tied the game.

In Overtime Canada had a chance to win, Evan Bouchard was hooked on a breakaway and the IIHF rules state any player can take the shot. Morgan Frost? Owen Tippett? Cody Glass? No actually, Max Comtois hopped over the boards to the surprise of everyone. He was terrible the entire tournament, diving the entire time, 5/6 points against Denmark…. and he missed. Just a few minutes later Canada got another great chance as Ty Smith dropped it to Cody Glass and he went backdoor to Noah Dobson who onetimed the puck…. just for his stick to break. The Finns went the other way and Toni Utunen sent them to the Semifinals with a shot over the shoulder of Mikey Dipietro.

So what went wrong? As I said, 2 goals in the last 2 games against good teams. It seemed impossible at times to just breakout of the end. Who was Canada’s best player even? You can’t even mention a Canadians name before the likes of Eeli Tolvanen, Klim Kostin, Martin Necas, Jack Hughes or Ryan Poehling. The defense struggled the entire tournament, there was certainly no Thomas Chabot logging 40 minutes on the backend. At the end of the day this Canadian Team wasn’t very good and they’re sent home 3 days before the tournament ends.
