The Ducks free fall
Everyone looks at Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry as winners but they have 1 cup that came in 2007 that had 3 hall of famers on the team (Chris Pronger, Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne). In the core years these guys couldn’t get it done, the losses were usually at the hands of LA or Chicago.
Now look at the Ducks, last place in the Western Conference with a -55 goal differential….. 23 worse than the next closest team. Corey Perry hasn’t played good since 2015 which was the last time he surpassed the 20 goal mark. Ryan Kesler hasn’t been good since 2016 when he seemingly fell off a cliff last year by getting 14 points in 44 games, this year isn’t off to a much better start where he has 6 points in 48 games and is a -21. Ryan Getzlaf is the guy in Anaheim and was terrific last season but now… 36 points in 51 games and yes, a -21.
So what do all these guys have in common? You usually see players really tail off at age 36… not 33 like Getzlaf and Perry. What all these guys have in common. They’ve all played over 950 games in the regular season to go along with over 100 playoff games each. I’m not doctor but those years of constantly going to the 3rd round has caught up to these guys.
There are very good players in San Diego, Sam Steel, Troy Terry and then Max Jones are all off to good starts in their pro careers… same goes for Isaac Lundestrom who made the ducks out of camp but is back in Sweden. Max Comtois also got off to a nice start before getting sent back to the Q. None of these guys project as stars, good players but not stars. Bob Murray was betting on Rickard Rakell and Nick Ritchie to take steps this year. Rakell has 9 goals, Ritchie has 8 and has never scored more than 15 in a season…. The Ducks should probably call a spade a spade with Ritchie who’s over 200 games in his career
This team should be going off the back end now. The problem with that is Hampus Lindholm and Cam Fowler have played more than 70 games just once in the last 4 years and Josh Manson (who I think is fantastic) is having the worst season of his career. Brandon Montour’s rover style game works at times but isn’t sustainable… looks bad considering they chose to keep him over Shea Theodore in the expansion draft. The only thing the Ducks have working for them is they have a top 5 goalie in the league in John Gibson.
Bob Murray is now the coach even with no experience, he also said that he has no problem going to guys like Getzlaf or Perry asking them to waive their no movement clauses. Which in theory would make sense but both of them make over 8 million. I could see a Getzlaf trade but no thanks to Perry. Anaheim needs a major surgery and they have some work to do.
